I only stayed one night, but was satisfied with the stay. The staff were efficient and the check in process took mere moments. They didn't offer any ‘added-value’ and we had to call down for the Wi-Fi password as it wasn't in the room. Fine, but average. The location was right on one of the main streets in Barnstaple and was easy enough to get to. They have two parking areas at the back of the hotel, but you can’t drive into them from the front of the hotel. You need to drive around the back by way of another road. Because of the location, with the room window open, it did get quite noisy as drunken revellers walked by and chatted, sung and shouted into the early hours of the morning. I would have kept the window closed, but the room and the building, were very warm and uncomfortably so. The room, 104, had a de-humidifier and fan which was on all night trying to cool us down. It worked OK, but after 3 AM I had to open the window too to accelerate the cooling! The bed was very comfortable and the room a good size. The bathroom was modern and the shower quick to heat up and powerful. Apart from the heat, I was quite happy with the room. They had a sign that offered free-breakfast for any bookings whilst we were there, but when we enquired, we were excluded because we didn't book direct. I didn't use the hotel restaurant or the coffee shop, but they looked nice enough. I would stay again, but would probably try another hotel in Barnstaple before I did.

This was the latest visit of many and the Imperial, popular and busy as it is, still manages to provide a country house atmosphere coupled with very high standards of service from the friendly but professional staff. Bedrooms have been redecorated and bathrooms have the latest in plumbing. A feature of the rooms is the bedside reading light (rarely found these days) while the levels of cleanliness and hygiene are excellent. As fairly regular customers the staff are aware of our fondness for peppermint tea and so, in addition to regular tea and coffee we were given a box of peppermint tea bags. It is this kind of attention to detail which helps to make the Imperial outstanding.
Highly enjoyable and relaxing stay. First class and friendly service from everyone. Our room was kept spotlessly clean and the food, at both breakfast and dinner times was first rate. We very much hope to visit again.

We arrived late but found a warm welcome and spacious beautiful rooms. It's just a very short distance from the town center, so we were able to find a great place for dinner. An excellent breakfast in the morning saw us off to start our walk along the Southwest Coast Path -- I heartily recommend this place for anyone staying over in Barnstable.
In September we spent a very enjoyable weekend at the Old Vicarage Bed & Breakfast in Barnstaple, hosted by Sandi and Bryan. We stayed in bedroom number 1, which is beautifully furnished and decorated, with a view over the garden. The bathroom was the largest we've ever stayed in. We thoroughly enjoyed the personal touches e.g. the chocolates on the pillow and the scrumptious home-made cake left in the room alongside the tea & coffee making facilities. Breakfast is delicious with a wide choice of freshly-cooked full-English or fruits and cereals. We were so impressed by the friendly hosts and the lovely setting that we most certainly intend to make a return visit soon. We highly recommend this place to all our friends, family and colleagues who visit this part of Devon. A little Devon treasure, not to be missed.

A lovely, welcoming couple; Nothing was too much trouble for Helen & Kevin. A clean, comfortable and homely B&B situated in an ideal location for both local & seaside attractions. Will definitely stay again.
My second stay at Crossways. Glad to say everything's as good as last time. Looking forward to my next visit.
If you would like something truly different you might like to have a look at Airbnb. These are mostly B and Bs provided by people on a very informal basis. The may have a spare room, a yurt, a cottage or a barge with space they can receive guests for a night or a month! The website is highly professional. You can really see what you are going to get. Very well worth a look. Airbnb also show 'conventional' B&Bs as well. Enjoy!
