Always a good venue. Good food, good staff, good atmosphere.
We had a nice Christmas meal with a large group. The rooms where excellent, very quiet considering the road outside.

This was the latest visit of many and the Imperial, popular and busy as it is, still manages to provide a country house atmosphere coupled with very high standards of service from the friendly but professional staff. Bedrooms have been redecorated and bathrooms have the latest in plumbing. A feature of the rooms is the bedside reading light (rarely found these days) while the levels of cleanliness and hygiene are excellent. As fairly regular customers the staff are aware of our fondness for peppermint tea and so, in addition to regular tea and coffee we were given a box of peppermint tea bags. It is this kind of attention to detail which helps to make the Imperial outstanding.
Our second New Year visit to the Imperial and once again had a fantastic time. Overall the staff were wonderful looking after our every need. The selection and quality of food was outstanding. I would however wish to raise a couple of issues - Firstly the dress code - The invoice I received states jacket or tie with no jeans after 6.30pm. The documentation in our room was worded slightly different. This appear to have created confusion as during our stay we saw people in the dining room with jeans, jacket with no tie, shirt with no tie or jacket, shirt with tie and no jacket and of course those with jacket and tie. This needs clarification and when the dress code is set needs to be enforced otherwise some it appears do whatever they like. I believe the formality is what attracts many to the Imperial. Secondly we went to the trouble of ordering a bottle of Champagne for midnight on New Years Eve. Unfortunately this was a waste of time as others who ordered just prior to midnight were served before me. Indeed between 11.45 and 11.55 I reminded the same waiter on 3 occasions before my Champagne was delivered in a rush 2 minutes before midnight. I found this disappointing as last year ordering in advance worked extremely well, clearly there were some issues this year and had I not reminded him I'm convinced it would not have arrived.

We arrived late but found a warm welcome and spacious beautiful rooms. It's just a very short distance from the town center, so we were able to find a great place for dinner. An excellent breakfast in the morning saw us off to start our walk along the Southwest Coast Path -- I heartily recommend this place for anyone staying over in Barnstable.
In September we spent a very enjoyable weekend at the Old Vicarage Bed & Breakfast in Barnstaple, hosted by Sandi and Bryan. We stayed in bedroom number 1, which is beautifully furnished and decorated, with a view over the garden. The bathroom was the largest we've ever stayed in. We thoroughly enjoyed the personal touches e.g. the chocolates on the pillow and the scrumptious home-made cake left in the room alongside the tea & coffee making facilities. Breakfast is delicious with a wide choice of freshly-cooked full-English or fruits and cereals. We were so impressed by the friendly hosts and the lovely setting that we most certainly intend to make a return visit soon. We highly recommend this place to all our friends, family and colleagues who visit this part of Devon. A little Devon treasure, not to be missed.

A lovely, welcoming couple; Nothing was too much trouble for Helen & Kevin. A clean, comfortable and homely B&B situated in an ideal location for both local & seaside attractions. Will definitely stay again.
My second stay at Crossways. Glad to say everything's as good as last time. Looking forward to my next visit.
If you would like something truly different you might like to have a look at Airbnb. These are mostly B and Bs provided by people on a very informal basis. The may have a spare room, a yurt, a cottage or a barge with space they can receive guests for a night or a month! The website is highly professional. You can really see what you are going to get. Very well worth a look. Airbnb also show 'conventional' B&Bs as well. Enjoy!
